OK Here is the boiled down summary of the RIDER
oil article:
First they reiterated the well-known fact that MC engines place greater demands on oil due to greater engine heat stress, roller bearings, clutch & gear case function & debris from these.
MC oils therefore have more additives:
Zinc - engine wear
Antifoam - higher revs
Antiacids - to combat less frequent use & seasonal storage
Detergent & dispersants - to carry clutch & tranny debris to filter better.
Stay away from "Energy efficient" SJ automotive oils - cause clutch slippage
Gear oil has high sulfur - for wear resistance
Engine oil has low sulfur - lower acid formation
MC oil has to balance between these.
MC gear teeth will "slice" high multi vis oils to lower vis. MC oils are more shear stable.
Summary on the summary - Normal non-stressful riding with normal to frequent oil changes - OK to use automotive oils. High heat, high stress riding - "likely to survive in better shape if you use specialty MC lubricants".
Change oil before and after seasonal storage to minimize acid formation.
There it is!
